Topic for discussion – should we charge for Holds not collected?

The Toronto Public Library has announced its intention to charge users $1 for every held item they do not pick up, starting July 16. See the article here.

I don’t think we should. The less fines the better, but perhaps we could rethink how long we keep items on the hold shelves. Our members can now suspend their holds online without losing their place in the queue and we would get a better turn around on popular items with a shorter period on the hold shelf. Food for thoughts…
