Wolfram Alpha update

Posted on December 23, 2009. Filed under: Reference, Web sites | Tags: |

Have you used Wolfram Alpha lately?

They have done some quite amazing things it seems. For an update, have a look at their latest blog entry  (you can check our previous blog entries on Wolfram Alpha here). Their new additions includes material relating to Mathematics and Computing (sums and matrix computations anyone?), Science and Health (there is a physical exercise calculator, but we won’t look at this until the new year, right?) and Socioeconomics and Culture (every Olympic events since 1896, music data, international phone codes).

If you are using it, what do you think about it?

Heapr

Posted on September 7, 2009. Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , , , , , |

Heapr is a search engine aggregator that combines Google results with Twitter, Wolfram Alpha and Wikipedia for a contemporary mix of results.

Heapr presents Google-generated results on the left-hand side of the screen, while you can choose between the other sources at right. Arguably, Wolfram Alpha’s the most interesting addition, since Wikipedia results often show up high in Google anyway, though in practice Wolfram can’t cope well with many standard searches. One downside: the site uses the main Google US engine, which gives notably different results than the Australian site.

Is 42 the answer or is it Wolfram Alpha?

There is a new type of search engine on the block: Wolfram Alpha. It can do some pretty good tricks. To find out more watch the demonstration (not a You Tube one so you can watch it at any time). The demo runs for about 13 to 14 minutes.
